Why RoastEval Exists

Specialty coffee has developed sophisticated methods for evaluating green coffee, yet there is no widely accepted standard for evaluating the quality of coffee roasting itself.

RoastEval was created to provide an independent, transparent, and repeatable assessment of coffee roasting. Every evaluation follows the same published methodology, allowing roasters to better understand their work and giving coffee drinkers a meaningful way to compare roasting quality.

Independence

Every coffee submitted to RoastEval is evaluated using the same methodology regardless of the roaster's reputation, size, or previous scores.

RoastEval exists to evaluate roasting—not to promote particular companies, processing methods, or coffee origins.

Transparency

The RoastEval philosophy and methodology are published openly so that anyone can understand how evaluations are performed and how scores are determined.

Public reports contribute to RoastEval rankings, while private evaluations receive the same assessment without being published.

Looking Forward

RoastEval aims to encourage discussion about coffee roasting by providing a consistent framework for evaluating roast quality.
