Answers to common questions about RoastEval submissions and evaluations.
What does RoastEval evaluate?
RoastEval evaluates the quality of coffee roasting. We do not evaluate the quality of green coffee.
What does it cost?
Each evaluation costs $10 CAD.
Can I submit any coffee?
Yes. However, RoastEval evaluates how effectively a roast expresses the unique characteristics of a coffee. Roasts that obscure origin character, such as very dark roasts, are therefore unlikely to receive high scores.
How much coffee should I send?
Please send 60 grams of whole bean coffee for each sample submitted.
When should I roast my coffee?
Samples should be roasted as close as possible to shipping so they can be evaluated between 1.5 and 3 weeks after the roast date.
How long does an evaluation take?
Evaluations are typically completed within three weeks of receiving your coffee.
Will my report be public?
You may choose either a public or private evaluation when submitting your coffee.
Can I appeal an evaluation?
Yes. A request may be made to re-evaluate the original sample, provided sufficient coffee remains and the sample still falls within the 1.5–3 week evaluation window after roasting.
Can I submit multiple coffees?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of coffees that may be submitted.
How is a roaster's overall score calculated?
A roaster's overall score is the average of their five most recent public RoastEval scores.
At least three public evaluations are required before a roaster appears on the leaderboard. Using a rolling average allows scores to reflect a roaster's current performance while still rewarding consistency over time.
